If I know I have to have a tough conversation, I used to prepare for it like a court case.
That’s what law school trains you to do. Anticipate every argument. Predict every counter. Prepare for the worst.
So I would rehearse it in my head.
What they would say.
What I would say back.
How it would go badly.
How I would recover.
By the time the actual conversation happened, I was drained. Anxious. Stressed. Sometimes even nauseous.
Here’s what I didn’t understand back then:
Your brain is wired to scan for worst-case scenarios.
When you mentally rehearse a stressful situation over and over, your body responds as if it’s real. Muscles tighten. Heart rate increases. Stress hormones rise.
So I was living the conversation twice.
Once in my head.
And once in real life.
The turning point came after one conversation I had completely stressed myself out over. I had run every worst-case scenario in my mind.
And then… it went great.
That’s when it hit me.
Even if it goes badly, why am I living it twice?
That makes no sense.
So I changed the rule.
Now I prepare lightly.
What’s the outcome I want?
What are the two points I need to make?
Then I stop.
If I catch myself rehearsing or fortune-telling, I interrupt it. I use tools like “Cancel, Cancel” or even the Rubber Band Snap technique to break the pattern before it builds momentum.
Then I tell myself: wait and see how it plays out.
I’m not perfect. Thoughts still pop up. But I don’t let them turn into a full-blown imaginary trial anymore.
And here’s what I’ve noticed:
Most conversations go far better than anxiety predicted.
Your brain is wired to scan for worst-case scenarios. But rehearsing catastrophe doesn’t protect you. It just exhausts you.
