You probably don’t think of yourself as an overthinker.
You think of yourself as responsible. Strategic. Prepared.
When I was practicing law, I was trained to think through every angle. Every possible outcome. Every direction a conversation could go.
That skill makes you effective.
But even outside of law, high performers tend to do the same thing.
They don’t overthink because they’re weak. They overthink because they care.
They want to get it right.
They want to avoid mistakes.
They want their decisions to be solid.
The drive to be thorough quietly turns into the need to be perfect.
And perfection keeps the brain scanning for what could go wrong.
That’s where anticipation turns into rumination.
I didn’t just think things through. I rehearsed them.
Conversations I hadn’t had yet.
Decisions that didn’t need a full analysis.
Even simple choices felt heavy.
And here’s what most high performers don’t notice:
You don’t rehearse how well it might go.
You rehearse what could go wrong.
Unfortunately, that often turns into two classic traps.
Mind reading. You assume you already know what the other person is thinking.
Fortune telling. You predict how the conversation will unfold.
And somehow, in your mind, it almost always ends badly.
You haven’t had the conversation.
You don’t have the data.
But your nervous system reacts like it’s real.
That drains energy.
It slows decisions.
It changes your tone before the conversation even starts.
And it chips away at your inner peace.
Here’s the shift that changed everything for me:
There’s a difference between thinking something through and overthinking it.
Strategic thinking moves you forward.
Rumination, replaying the same thoughts without resolution, just burns bandwidth.
Now when I catch it, I ask:
Is this productive… or am I looping?
If it’s looping, I decide and move.
