For a long time, anxiety felt like a cruel game.
Just when I thought I was moving in the right direction, it would show up again.
Same body sensations. Same “why now?” thoughts. Same frustration.
I remember thinking, Seriously? I’ve already been here. Why is this happening again?
What made it even harder was that sometimes it came completely out of the blue. Everything could be fine, and then I’d feel that familiar shift in my body. If you’ve experienced anxiety before, you know exactly what I’m talking about. That sudden internal change that makes you wonder what’s about to happen next.
What finally changed things for me wasn’t a new trick or technique.
It was the moment I stopped treating anxiety like an emergency.
Instead of panicking or getting angry, I almost laughed it off. Not in a dismissive way, but in a you’re not running the show way.
I’d think, Oh, here we go again.
And then I’d move on.
If I needed to, I’d calmly talk myself through it. Nothing bad has ever happened here. Nothing bad just happened. This is just a body sensation, not a threat. Maybe it’s fatigue. Maybe it’s a random ache. Either way, it doesn’t get to control what I do next.
The key wasn’t proving anxiety wrong.
It was refusing to give it power.
Because once you give anxiety power, it takes it and runs.
When I stopped feeding it fear, urgency, and meaning, it stopped controlling the room. The sensations felt less threatening. The moments passed faster. And I stopped seeing them as setbacks or signs that something was wrong.
That shift in my internal dialogue changed everything.
If you want to learn how to make that same shift and stop anxiety from running the conversation in your head, you can explore Internal Dialogue Mastery.
