What Changed When I Stopped Fighting My Thoughts

For a long time, whenever an anxious thought showed up, my instinct was to fight it.

I would argue with it. I would try to shut it down. I would try to block it out completely.

None of that worked.

In fact, the harder I fought, the stronger the thought seemed to come back. When that didn’t work, I tried avoiding it. But even then, I wasn’t really free. I was always waiting for the thought to return so I could start fighting again.

That constant battle drained me.

It felt like being stuck in a fight all day without any real breaks. Even when things were quiet, I was on edge, wondering when my mind would kick back up again. That mental exhaustion eventually showed up physically. I felt tired before the day even really started.

What finally changed things for me wasn’t a new technique or a mindset hack. It was a simple realization.

The fight itself was the problem.

Every time I treated a thought like a threat, my mind pushed it harder and louder. The more I tried to control it, the more power it seemed to have. Fighting wasn’t calming my mind. It was keeping anxiety alive.

So instead of fighting, I stopped feeding it.

I learned to acknowledge the thought and take the threat away from it. It wasn’t dangerous. I had just been treating it like it was. When I stopped reacting, stopped arguing, and stopped trying to win, the thought lost its punch.

It didn’t disappear overnight. But it stopped running the show.

That shift gave me my energy back. I wasn’t constantly on guard anymore. I trusted myself to handle what showed up, instead of trying to prevent it from happening at all.

What made this change stick wasn’t willpower or positive thinking. It was learning how to talk to myself differently in those moments. When I changed my internal dialogue early, the thoughts stopped snowballing. Anxiety lost its power because I stopped giving it authority.

If this resonates and you want to understand how to respond to your thoughts without fighting them, that’s exactly what I walk through inside Internal Dialogue Mastery.
