Brand new gym.
Didn’t know anyone. New guy energy. Still figuring out the vibe.
Mid-set, I felt it.
Someone staring at me.
And my brain immediately tried to cue up the old dramatic storyline. Prison-movie soundtrack warming up. “Stay ready.”
Not because I was actually about to fight anyone. Just that instinctive, over-the-top preparation mode. The mind trying to forecast a problem before one even exists.
And I let the trailer run for a couple seconds.
Years ago?
I would’ve watched the whole film. Full production budget. Extended director’s cut.
Heart rate up. Overthinking activated.
What’s their problem?
Is this about to be something?
Do I need to handle this?
That’s how anxiety used to work for me. A look. A tone. A small uncertainty. And suddenly my imagination was writing a full script.
This time?
I turned around.
It was a pug. In a stroller. Staring at me like I owed him money.
I laughed.
Went right back to my workout.
Nothing escalated. Nothing dramatic. Just a normal moment that my brain briefly tried to turn into a thriller.
That’s the shift.
The thoughts still show up. They probably always will. But I don’t sit down and watch the movie anymore.
And that’s what real progress looks like. Not eliminating the first thought. Not pretending your brain never throws out dramatic suggestions.
It’s noticing the storyline… and choosing not to fund it.
If you’re a high-performer, you know this pattern well. Your brain wants to anticipate problems. It wants to be prepared. That skill can build businesses and careers.
But unchecked, it can also build imaginary battles that drain your energy.
The work isn’t to silence your mind.
It’s to stop letting it run the theater.
If this sounds familiar, I put together a simple framework that walks through how I retrained my internal dialogue and stopped feeding anxious storylines.
