There was a time I walked out of my boss’s office and told him I needed to use the bathroom.
We were talking about a case that might have to go to court.
Most of my work as an attorney involved drafting complaints, motions, and handling cases outside the courtroom. We didn’t go to court often. But when a case couldn’t be settled, that was part of the job.
And just talking about that possibility sent my body into panic.
Standing up there.
Speaking.
Everyone staring at me.
My heart started racing.
My voice felt shaky.
That tunnel vision started creeping in.
And the only thought running through my head was:
“If he sees this, I’m done. I have to hide this at all costs.”
So I went to the bathroom.
Cold water on my face.
Staring at myself in the mirror.
Trying to calm down enough to walk back in like nothing happened.
I truly believed if anyone found out I had anxiety about going to court, my reputation would be ruined.
What kind of attorney gets anxious about a courtroom?
I felt embarrassed.
Weak.
Like I was playing the part of an attorney… but didn’t actually have what it took.
There was a layer of imposter syndrome on top of the anxiety.
And the worst part?
I felt completely alone.
I couldn’t talk about it.
I didn’t have a coach.
I didn’t even know where to look for help.
Now when I think about that version of me, I don’t see weakness.
I see a man trying to survive something he didn’t understand.
I feel compassion for him.
Because feeling alone in anxiety is one of the heaviest feelings there is.
Especially when you’re the one who’s supposed to be strong. The leader. The professional. The steady one everyone else relies on.
If you’re in that place right now, hiding it, pretending nothing’s wrong, walking into bathrooms to steady yourself before going back into a room, you’re not weak. You’re not broken. You’re not an imposter.
You’re dealing with something you haven’t been shown how to handle yet.
And that’s fixable.
