How I Accidentally Gave Anxiety Inside Information

For a long time, anxiety felt personal.

It always seemed to show up at the exact moments I did not want it to. A dinner. A party. A conversation I cared about. I would think to myself, “Whatever happens, please do not show up right now,” and almost on cue, there it was.

That used to frustrate the hell out of me.

It felt like anxiety had insider information. Like it somehow knew the exact moment I did not want it to appear and chose that moment every single time.

What I did not realize back then was this.
I was not unlucky.
I was not broken.
And anxiety was not random.

I was accidentally inviting it in.

Every time I tried to control it, negotiate with it, or mentally tell it not to show up, I was doing the same thing. I was focusing on it. Watching for it. Bracing for it.

That internal dialogue quietly opened the door.

Once I finally noticed that pattern, everything changed.

When I stopped running those “do not show up” conversations in my head, anxiety usually did not show up at all. And if it did, it was mild. Nowhere near the disaster I had imagined it would be.

That is the part most people miss.

They are not trying to sabotage themselves. They do not even realize they are doing it. They are simply unaware of how powerful their internal dialogue really is and how easily it can hand anxiety the inside information it needs to crash the moment.

That awareness is what changed things for me.
It is also exactly where I would focus if I were helping you work through this.

Not by forcing calm.
Not by fighting anxiety.
But by learning to catch the thought that quietly opens the door before it ever swings wide.

If this feels uncomfortably familiar, you are not alone. And you are not doing anything wrong.

You just have not been shown where the door actually is.
