When the Doorbell Made Me Panic

There was a time when the doorbell rang, and I froze. No bad history. No trauma. No reason.

But my brain reacted like I was on the run from the Gambino crime family.

First came the silence. Then the slow crouch. Then the elite tactical move to peek through the blinds without being seen. Full military operation.

Looking back, it made absolutely no sense. No one had ever tried to hurt me. No one had ever shown up to fight me. Nothing had happened at my door that should have wired me to react that way.

Still, anxiety hit the panic button anyway.

Here’s the part I’m proud of.

When the doorbell rings today, I still wonder who it is.

But I don’t go into mission mode.

I don’t assume danger. I don’t feel that surge of fear in my chest.

Most of the time I’m just trying to figure out whether it’s a package or someone selling something. And if I really want to know, I check the Ring camera from my phone like a normal human.

That’s progress.

Not perfect. Better.

And that’s how change usually happens.

Anxiety doesn’t always make sense. It can make ordinary moments feel dramatic and urgent. If your brain does stuff like that, you’re not weird or broken.

A lot of us have been there.

And reactions can calm down when you learn how to relate to the thoughts differently.

If you want help figuring out why your anxiety reacts the way it does and what it would take to start dialing it down, a Strategy Session is the best place to begin. We’ll look at what’s keeping you stuck, where you want to go, and I’ll walk you through how my coaching works so you can decide if it’s the right next step.
