For years, I believed my anxiety was a body problem.
Heart racing.
Tight chest.
Shaky hands.
So when the ER doctor suggested medication, I felt relief.
Finally. A solution.
At the same time, I remember thinking, How bad is this if I need a prescription?
I’m an attorney. Logical. Controlled. Medication made me feel like something was seriously wrong with me.
But I took it anyway because I was terrified of another panic attack.
It didn’t fix it.
In fact, I felt worse. More anxious. Having thoughts that deeply unsettled me.
That’s when the story started to crack.
Not just, “This pill isn’t working.”
But, “If this is the solution, what does that say about me?”
I got off it carefully with my doctor’s help. Then I did what most high performers do.
I researched.
Supplements.
Physical fixes.
Lifestyle tweaks.
For years.
What I didn’t question was the category.
It never occurred to me that the problem might be my internal dialogue.
But the tone of mine was brutal.
“I’m screwing this up.”
“I’m supposed to be smarter than this.”
“Why does everything fall apart?”
“Why can’t I get this right?”
Harsh. Relentless. Performance-based.
I thought anxiety was chemistry.
Then I thought it was lifestyle.
It took me years to realize it was conversation.
As long as my internal dialogue stayed the same, my anxiety did too.
